Plenty of online stores lose sales at the very last step: a shopper has a simple question ("will this fit my model?", "will it arrive by Friday?"), can't find anyone to ask, and closes the tab. Integrating your online store with WhatsApp fixes that, and it also gives you a channel to bring customers back.
The integration has four pieces: a WhatsApp button on your site (with a pre-filled message that says which product the shopper is looking at), product links used well in your chats, organized customer service with the WhatsApp Business tools, and a VIP customer group for repeat purchases. In this guide you'll set up each one, with ready-made templates and a final checklist.
The customer journey between your store and WhatsApp
Before you install anything, picture the flow you want to create. Each stage below has a piece of the integration responsible for it.
1. A WhatsApp button on your site
WhatsApp has an official click-to-chat feature: a link that opens a chat with your number, and it can include pre-filled text. The usual format is https://wa.me/ followed by your full phone number in international format (country code plus number, digits only). Check the current format, and how to add the pre-filled message, in the WhatsApp Help Center.
Most e-commerce platforms have a setting, theme option or app that adds this button without touching code. Search for "WhatsApp" in your platform's app store or in your theme settings.
Where to place the button
| Location | What it's for | Suggested pre-filled message |
|---|---|---|
| Product page | Questions about that item, right next to the price | "Hi! I have a question about this product: {name}" |
| Cart | Sorting out shipping, coupons or payment before they give up | "Hi! I have an order in my cart and need some help" |
| Footer / floating icon | General support on any page | "Hi! I came from your website and wanted to get in touch" |
| Order confirmation page | After-sales support and the VIP group invite | "Hi! I just placed order {number}" |
| Returns and exchanges page | Solving problems without email back-and-forth | "Hi! I need help with a return" |
2. Product links in your chats
On WhatsApp, the right link at the right moment is what closes the sale. A few practical rules:
- Send the product page link, not your homepage. Every extra click is another chance to drop off.
- With the variant already selected, if your store supports it (color, size). The customer lands ready to buy.
- Together with the answer to their question, never on its own: "Yes, it fits! Here it is: {link}".
- With tracking, so you know how many sales came from WhatsApp. The walkthrough is in UTM tracking links for WhatsApp.
3. The WhatsApp Business catalog
Besides your website, you can build a catalog inside WhatsApp Business. According to the WhatsApp Help Center, it shows up on your business profile, and each item needs a name, at least one image and the country of origin (price and sale price are optional).
For an online store, the catalog works best as a highlights window: best sellers and new arrivals, each with a link to its page in your store. People who reach you on WhatsApp see your top products without leaving the chat, and they complete the purchase on your site, where shipping, stock and payment live.
4. Organized customer service
Integration doesn't help if replies are slow. The WhatsApp Business tools that help a store the most:
Shortcuts for text and media you send often: delivery times, shipping, returns, payment methods.
Full setup, with templates for each tool, is in WhatsApp Business tips to sell more.

5. A VIP customer group
The VIP group is where the integration turns into repeat sales. The idea: customers who have already bought and chose to hear from you join a group with early access to deals, coupons and new arrivals.
- 1Create the group with a name that states the benefit
For example: "Aurora Store VIP — early deals". In the description, say what gets posted and how often.
- 2Offer the invite at the right moments
The order confirmation page, the confirmation email, a card in the package with a QR code for the invite link, and your after-sales chat.
- 3Give people a real reason to stay
Early access to sales, an exclusive coupon, restock alerts. If the group just repeats what's on the website, nobody stays.
- 4Keep the group focused
If your store has very different audiences, open groups by topic. Compare the options in WhatsApp group vs community vs channel.
- 5Post with a predictable rhythm
A few deals a day, at fixed times, always with a photo, the price and the product link.

6. Keep your group catalog up to date
When a store has lots of products, copying the photo, name, price and link for every deal adds up fast. Some stores handle it with a "deals of the week" spreadsheet; others automate it with tools like AutoProd, which send the products you register to your groups at the pace you set.
Manual or automated, the rule is the same: sold-out products come out of your promotions the same day, and the price in the group has to match the price on the site. A mismatch frustrates customers, and advertising a price you don't honor can break consumer protection rules in many countries. Check the advertising and consumer protection rules in your country.
