You post deals in five groups, on your Status and in your channel, and your store's sales go up... but where did they come from? Without tracking links, WhatsApp is a black box: you don't know which group sells, which time works or which message convinces people.
The fix is simple and free: UTM parameters. They're tags you add to the end of a link (like ?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=group&utm_campaign=black-friday) that Google Analytics reads to show where each visit came from. In this guide you'll build links with Google's official tool, set up a naming pattern that doesn't turn into a mess, shorten links when it makes sense and read the results.
What UTM parameters are and why to use them on WhatsApp
When someone taps a link inside WhatsApp and lands on your site, Analytics often can't tell where the visit came from. It shows up as direct traffic, mixed in with people who typed your address. UTM parameters fix that: the link itself "tells" Analytics the source.
| Parameter | Question it answers | Example for WhatsApp |
|---|---|---|
utm_source | Where did the visit come from? | whatsapp |
utm_medium | What type of channel? | group, status, channel, support |
utm_campaign | Which campaign or promotion? | black-friday-2026, deals-week-41 |
utm_content | Which version, group or message? | group-home-1, msg-urgency |
utm_term | An extra detail (optional) | evening, coupon10 |
Step by step in the Campaign URL Builder
The Campaign URL Builder is Google's official tool for building UTM links. You fill in the fields and it generates the finished link, so there's no risk of a misplaced "?" or "&".
- 1Copy the product or page link
Use the final link to the exact page you want to promote (product, category, sale page).
- 2Open the Campaign URL Builder
Go to ga-dev-tools.google/campaign-url-builder and paste the address into the website URL field.
- 3Fill in source, medium and campaign
Use your naming pattern (see below):
whatsapp,group,deals-week-41. - 4Use content to tell versions apart
Add the group or message version:
group-home-1. This is how you find out which group sells the most. - 5Copy the generated link
The tool builds the full address. Test it in your browser to make sure the page loads normally.
- 6Log it in your spreadsheet
Write down the link, the date, the group and the deal. Without a log, a month from now nobody will remember what each link was.
Set a naming pattern (and never overthink it again)
The number one UTM mistake isn't technical, it's organizational: one day you write WhatsApp, the next whatsapp, the next wa, and your report shows three different sources that are really the same thing. Define the pattern once and keep it somewhere visible.
RULES
- all lowercase, words separated by hyphens
- no spaces, no special characters
utm_source = whatsapp
utm_medium = group | status | channel | support | broadcast
utm_campaign = {action}-{period} e.g. deals-week-41, black-friday-2026, holiday-gifts-2026
utm_content = {where}-{version} e.g. group-home-1, group-games-ps, status-morning, msg-coupon
Ready-made examples by situation
| Situation | medium | campaign | content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deal in the home goods group | group | deals-week-41 | group-home-1 |
| Same product in the gaming group | group | deals-week-41 | group-games-1 |
| Morning Status post | status | deals-week-41 | status-morning |
| Post in your channel | channel | deals-week-41 | channel |
| Link sent during a support chat | support | after-sales | quick-reply-shipping |
| Testing two messages | group | copy-test-october | msg-urgency / msg-benefit |
Should you shorten the link?
A UTM link gets long. On WhatsApp that's less of a problem than on other platforms, because the link is tappable and often shows a preview. Still, there are good reasons to shorten: the message looks cleaner, and some shorteners show how many clicks the link got.
- Cleaner, easier-to-read messages
- Click counts in the shortener's dashboard, useful even for links that aren't to your own site
- A QR code to share the link offline
- Hides the destination, which can make people less willing to tap
- Free plans have few links per month
- Some affiliate programs restrict link shorteners
How to read the results in Google Analytics
Once your links are live, the data shows up in Google Analytics' acquisition reports, under the source/medium and campaign dimensions (which map to utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign). Menu names change with updates; the current path is in Google Analytics Help.
What to look at, in order of importance:
whatsapp / group brought compared with whatsapp / status.A 15-minute weekly review
- Filter to the week and look at campaigns with the source
whatsapp. - Compare groups by
utm_content: which brought the most visits and purchases? - Note your top three products and best posting time in your spreadsheet.
- Decide on one change for next week (more deals from the niche that sells, a new time, a different message).
To connect posting times with results, use the windows suggested in the best times to post deals on WhatsApp as a starting point, then test. The full metrics spreadsheet is in how to measure your WhatsApp deals group results.
Example: two groups, same deal
Imagine you send the same deal to two groups, each with its own utm_content:
Was $129 → Now $84
🛒 store.com/cookware?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=group&utm_campaign=deals-week-41&utm_content=group-home-1 12:10 PM
In group 2, the link ends in utm_content=group-home-2. On Monday, Analytics shows how many visits and purchases each group brought. If one group brings in far fewer, dig in: is the audience different? Is the posting time worse? Is the group tired of deals? You only get to ask those questions when you measure.
A spreadsheet to keep track of your links
Analytics gives you the numbers; the spreadsheet gives you the context. One row per link is enough. After four weeks of logging, you'll start to see patterns no report shows on its own: which niche sells on which day, which kind of message drives purchases and which groups are cooling off.
| Date | Group / channel | Product | utm_content | Visits | Purchases | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 6 | Home Finds 1 | Cookware set | group-home-1 | — | — | posted at 12:10 PM |
| Oct 6 | Home Finds 2 | Cookware set | group-home-2 | — | — | posted at 7:30 PM |
| Oct 7 | Status | Insulated bottle | status-morning | — | — | in-use photo |
Test one thing at a time
Want to know whether an urgency message ("today only") sells more than a benefit message ("fits in a 16-inch drawer")? Send the same product, at the same time, to similar groups, changing only the text, and tell them apart with utm_content (msg-urgency and msg-benefit). If you change the text, the time and the product all at once, you can't tell what made the difference. Repeat the test a few times before concluding anything: a single day can fool you. Message ideas to test are in how to write a deal message that sells.
