Groups, communities and channels look similar, but they work very differently, and picking the wrong format is one of the most common reasons deals go unseen. The short answer: a group is a many-to-many conversation with up to 1,024 members; a community brings up to 100 groups under one roof, with up to 2,000 members in total; and a channel is a broadcast from you to your followers, with no conversation between them.
For promoting deals, almost everyone should start with a group. A community comes in when you need to organize several groups by topic, and a channel comes in when you want reach without moderating a conversation. Below you'll find the differences in detail, what to choose for each type of business and a step-by-step plan for combining all three.
Group vs community vs channel: the differences
Before deciding, look at what each format does side by side. All the numbers below come from the official WhatsApp Help Center.
| Group | Community | Channel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Everyone talks to everyone (within the admin's permissions) | Brings together several groups plus an announcement group | One-to-many broadcast |
| Limit | Up to 1,024 members | Up to 100 groups and up to 2,000 members in total | — |
| Do members see each other? | Yes | Within each group, yes | No: followers can't see each other |
| Where it shows up | In the chat list | In the communities area | In the Updates tab, separate from chats |
| Who can create it | Regular app and WhatsApp Business | Per the Help Center, only the app for individuals; Business accounts can't | Check the Help Center |
| Best for | Relationships, questions and conversational selling | Organizing groups by niche or region | Broad reach, no chat moderation |
WhatsApp groups: the room where sales happen
The group is the classic format for deals groups, resellers and gaming offers. You post a deal, members ask "still available?" or "does it fit my model?", and everyone else sees the answer. That public conversation creates social proof: when someone says they bought it and it arrived fine, the next person feels safer.
Two practical details from the Help Center that make a difference day to day:
- Invite link: in Group info, "Invite via link" lets you send the link, copy it or generate a QR code. If the link leaks somewhere it shouldn't, an admin can reset it and the old link stops working.
- 24-hour pause: when you add a lot of people, WhatsApp warns that you may need to wait 24 hours before adding more people to groups and creating new groups. One more reason to grow through the invite link, with people who chose to join.
- Open conversation builds social proof and answers questions on the spot
- Everyone knows how groups work
- The admin sets group permissions and controls the invite link
- Works in both the regular app and WhatsApp Business
- Fills up at 1,024 members, so you need new groups
- Needs moderation: spam from members, arguments, third-party links
- If everyone can talk, deals get lost in the conversation
- Lots of notifications lead members to mute the group
WhatsApp communities: several groups under one roof
A community is an umbrella that organizes related groups. Picture a store with a women's fashion group, a kids group and a home group: instead of three loose groups, they sit together in one community, with an announcement group that reaches everyone.
Do the math: 100 groups of 1,024 people would be far more than 2,000. In other words, a community is not a way to gather thousands of members. It's a way to organize: separate audiences by interest and give each one only what it cares about.
How to use a community for deals
- One group per niche: "Home Finds", "Beauty Finds", "Tech Finds". Each member joins only the topics they want.
- One group per platform (for gaming): PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC kept separate.
- One group per region (for local shops or local delivery).
- The announcement group for general notices: rules, support hours, heads-ups before big dates like Black Friday (November 27, 2026). Check the Help Center for who can post in it.
WhatsApp channels: one-to-many broadcasting
A channel works like a noticeboard: only you post, and followers receive. According to the Help Center, channels live in a separate tab (Updates), followers can't see each other and notifications start muted.
In practice, that means two things for sellers:
- Privacy attracts people who avoid groups. Many people won't join a group because they don't want their number visible to hundreds of strangers. In a channel, followers can't see each other.
- Muted notifications call for content people will look for. Since followers aren't notified by default, a channel works best with a predictable routine ("today's deals at noon") and an invitation to turn notifications on.
- Privacy: followers can't see each other
- No chat to moderate, no spam from members
- Good for reach and for people who just want to browse
- No conversation between members, so you lose the group's social proof
- Notifications start muted
- Lives in a separate tab, outside the chat list
If you're paid to promote a brand on your channel, the Help Center has a specific article on labeling paid partnerships in channels. For affiliate links, keep a clear disclosure and check the advertising disclosure rules in your country (e.g., FTC guidelines in the US).
Which one to choose for your type of business
There's no "best" format in general, only the best one for where you are now. Use these scenarios as a starting point.
One group with a well-defined topic. Focus on reaching your first 100 interested members before thinking about other formats.
Open group 2 with the same name and numbering. If your audiences differ, organize them by niche in a community.
A customer group for conversation and orders, plus the catalog on your profile. A community only if you sell very different lines.
A channel for news and reach, plus a smaller VIP group for customers who have already bought.
A community with one group per platform, so Nintendo fans don't get Xbox deals.
A channel as your main shop window; a group only if you want close conversation with fans.
Step by step: combining groups, communities and channels
These formats don't compete. A simple plan that works for most deals businesses:
- 1Start with one topic-based group
Define the niche and create the group with a clear name, photo and description. How to create a WhatsApp deals group walks you through it.
- 2Validate before expanding
Watch for a few weeks: do people click, ask and buy? If not, fix the niche before multiplying the problem across several groups.
- 3Split when audiences mix
If half the group wants makeup and the other half wants electronics, split into topic groups. If your account allows it, bring them together in a community.
- 4Open group 2 when you're full
Getting close to 1,024? Create the next one with the same naming pattern and share the new link in group 1 and on social media.
- 5Use the channel as a front door
For people who don't want to join a group, the channel shows the best deals of the day. Leave the invite to each niche group there.
- 6Review every month
Quiet groups, niches that don't sell, a channel with no views: cut what doesn't work and double down on what does.
Example: a deal in a niche group
Here's how a niche group inside a deals community receives a deal, and the conversation it sparks. That back-and-forth is what a channel doesn't have.
