Amazon Associates is the affiliate program most people try first, and also the one where beginners most often break a rule without noticing. This guide shows how to sign up in the US, the UK or India, the exact disclosure sentence Amazon requires, and the two rules that matter most when you share deals on WhatsApp: links only to people who asked for them, and no link shorteners that hide Amazon.
The short answer: sign up on the official Associates site for the Amazon store your audience uses (amazon.com, amazon.co.uk or amazon.in), read the Operating Agreement and the Policies, and put this sentence where people will see it: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." Send Amazon links only to people who opted in, and never disguise them behind a shortener.
What Amazon Associates is
Amazon Associates is Amazon's affiliate program. You get special links (Amazon calls them Special Links) to products on the Amazon store. When someone uses your link and makes a qualifying purchase, you earn a commission. Each Amazon store has its own Associates program, its own agreement and its own commission rates, which vary by category and change over time.
| Country | Official Associates site | Agreement and policies |
|---|---|---|
| United States | affiliate-program.amazon.com | Agreement · Policies |
| United Kingdom | affiliate-program.amazon.co.uk | Operating Agreement and Policies, linked from the Associates site |
| India | affiliate-program.amazon.in | Agreement |
How to sign up for Amazon Associates, step by step
The screens change over time and differ a little between countries. Here's the path, and what to prepare:
- 1Pick the right Amazon store
Join the program of the store your audience buys from. A UK group needs amazon.co.uk links; an Indian group needs amazon.in links.
- 2Open the official Associates site
Type the address from the table above. Don't sign up through ads, "agents" or lookalike sites.
- 3Fill in your details honestly
Use your real name and contact details. Payouts and tax information have to match.
- 4List where you'll promote
Describe your channels truthfully, including your WhatsApp group and the profiles or site you use to invite members.
- 5Read the agreement before accepting
Open the Operating Agreement and the Policies. Note the disclosure rule, what they say about messages and what they say about link shorteners.
- 6Set up payment and tax details
Complete them early so your first commission isn't delayed.
- 7Create your first Special Link
Pick one product in your niche, get its link from your Associates account and test it on your phone.
The official program for Amazon.com. UK and India have their own sites (see the table above).
- Required disclosure: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases."
- Special Links in SMS and direct messages only when solicited (opted in).
- No link shortening that makes it unclear you're linking to Amazon.
Amazon's rules, explained for people who share deals in groups
The Operating Agreement is long, but three rules decide whether your WhatsApp strategy is safe. Here they are, quoted from the official US pages, with what they mean in practice.
1. The disclosure sentence
Amazon requires Associates to state: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." The same sentence appears in the US and UK programs, and the India agreement says you must "clearly and prominently" state it. Use it exactly as written.
2. Messages must be solicited (opt-in)
The US Policies say: "You may include Special Links in emails, SMS and direct messaging from your social media Sites; provided, that such communications are solicited (i.e., opted into by the receiving customer)." The UK Policies have the same idea. In other words, a link sent to someone who never asked for it breaks the rules.
And WhatsApp? Does Amazon allow it?
The agreement doesn't name WhatsApp. The closest rule is the one above about SMS and direct messages: they're fine when the person opted in. In practice, that means:
- Groups people join by choice, through an invite link they clicked, fit the opt-in idea far better than adding contacts yourself;
- Private messages with Amazon links only to people who asked for them ("send me deals on air fryers");
- Never blast Amazon links to your whole contact list or to people you added to a group without asking.
For India, we couldn't confirm the rule about messages on the policies page we read, so check the India Operating Agreement yourself. If anything is unclear for your case, ask Associates support in your country before you scale up.
3. No link shorteners that hide Amazon
The US agreement is direct: "You will not use a link shortening service [...] in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site." This is the most common beginner mistake. A generic shortened link makes members think they're going to a random site, and it hides the destination Amazon wants people to see.
To see which deals are working, rely on the reports inside your Associates account, not on an external shortener. For links from other stores, see UTM tracking links for WhatsApp.
Where to put the disclosure in your WhatsApp group
Put it where members will actually see it, not hidden in one place. Three spots cover you: the group description, the pinned welcome message and every deal message that contains an Amazon link.

US, UK or India: what changes between programs
The disclosure sentence is the same in all three, but each program is a separate account with its own agreement, its own commission rates and its own payment and tax setup. You can't use a US account to earn on amazon.co.uk sales. If your audience is split across countries, it's usually cleaner to run one group per country and use the matching program in each. Before posting in a new market, reread that country's agreement: rules on messages and shorteners that we quoted from the US pages may be worded differently elsewhere, and for India we couldn't confirm them.
How to choose Amazon products to promote
- Check the price history. A "was/now" label isn't proof of a deal. Keepa is an Amazon price tracker that shows price history charts.
- Read recent reviews, especially the critical ones, before recommending anything.
- Stay in your niche. A kitchen group shouldn't suddenly get phone cases.
- Watch for big events like Prime Big Deal Days (October 6–7, 2026) and, in India, the Great Indian Festival starting October 8, 2026. See our 2026 online sales calendar.
- Be clear about price changes. Amazon prices can change at any time, so always write "price at time of posting".
Your daily routine as an Amazon Associate
- Shortlist (15 min): today's deals in your niche, filtered by price history.
- Links (10 min): create Special Links from your Associates account. No external shorteners.
- Post (2–3 time slots): a few deals each, always with the disclosure.
- Reply (5 min): answer questions privately, and only send links to people who ask.
- Review (weekly): check your Associates reports and adjust categories and times.
