Black Friday is the biggest moment of the year for South African deal groups, and also the moment when people get the most unwanted messages. If you run a WhatsApp group or broadcast list for deals, POPIA's rules on electronic direct marketing decide who you can message. This guide explains them in plain English and helps you plan Black Friday 2026, from Takealot's Blue Dot Sale to cash-on-delivery stores and payment links.
The short answer: under section 69 of POPIA, direct marketing by electronic means, which includes WhatsApp, generally needs the person's consent or an existing customer relationship; the Information Regulator published a guidance note on direct marketing on 3 December 2024. Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November. Takealot's 2026 Blue Dot dates had not been published when we checked, so don't announce them until Takealot does.
POPIA section 69 in plain English
The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) has a specific section on unsolicited electronic communications: section 69. On its guidance notes page, the Information Regulator lists the "Guidance note on direct marketing in terms of the Protection Of Personal Information Act of 2013 (POPIA), 03 December 2024", which covers both non-electronic (section 11) and electronic (section 69) unsolicited communications.
Law firm summaries of the rules (Baker McKenzie and Covington, for example) describe it this way: marketing by electronic means requires consent from the person, or that they are an existing customer. We haven't reproduced the guidance note's text here, so read it in full on the Regulator's site before relying on the details.
| Situation | Likely position | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| Someone joined your group through your invite link | They chose to receive your messages | Say clearly in the description what they will get and how to leave |
| Existing customer who bought from you | Summaries describe an existing-customer route | Check the guidance note for its conditions; always offer an easy opt-out |
| Number from a bought list or scraped from another group | No consent, no relationship | Don't add or message them |
| Friend of a member, added by them | They didn't opt in to you | Ask members to share the invite link instead |
WhatsApp's own Business Policy aligns with this: businesses may only contact people who gave them their number and opted in to receive messages. And WhatsApp's Terms forbid bulk and automated messaging that isn't authorised. So consent protects you twice: with the regulator and with your WhatsApp account.

Advertising claims: the ARB and the NCC
Consent decides who you message. What you say is a separate matter. The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) takes complaints about advertising that is "potentially misleading, offensive or unethical", and its Code of Advertising Practice covers "misleading claims, substantiation, offence and discrimination". The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is the regulator under the Consumer Protection Act.
For Black Friday that means: if you say "50% off", the reference price must be real; if you say "lowest price", you need to be able to back it up. Our guide to writing a deal message that sells shows how to sell without exaggerating.
Black Friday 2026 calendar for South African deal groups
Black Friday is the Friday after the fourth Thursday of November, so in 2026 it's 27 November, followed by Cyber Monday on 30 November. Each store sets its own campaign period.
Takealot runs its own Blue Dot Sale around Black Friday. According to BusinessTech (31 October 2025), in 2025 there was a countdown from 3 to 23 November and the Blue Dot Sale itself ran from 25 November to 1 December 2025. The 2026 dates had not been published when we checked on 2 October 2026.

Where South African shoppers buy, and how they pay
Jumia doesn't operate in South Africa, so local stores are the focus. A few verified details that matter for your group:
Accepts "credit, debit card, cash on delivery, and EFT", with free delivery over R750 (check the current conditions).
Runs the Blue Dot Sale. Its affiliate programme terms could not be verified on the official site, so check them yourself.
Cash on delivery is a big trust lever for buyers who are wary of paying online. When a store offers it, say so in your deal message. For your own products, Paystack's help centre lists South Africa among the countries where registered businesses can use it, and Flutterwave lists South Africa too, so a payment link is an option. WhatsApp doesn't process payments in South Africa: its payments documentation only covers India and Brazil.

Group, community or channel for Black Friday?
Black Friday can bring a rush of new members. Before it does, decide which WhatsApp format fits you, using the limits in WhatsApp's Help Center:
| Format | Size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Group | Up to 1,024 members | A close deal community where members can react and ask questions |
| Community | Up to 100 groups and 2,000 members in total | Splitting deals by niche (tech, fashion, home) under one umbrella |
| Channel | One-to-many broadcast in a separate tab; followers don't see each other | Big audiences who only want to read deals |
Whatever the format, the consent logic stays the same: people should choose to follow or join. Channels are a natural fit here, because followers subscribe themselves and notifications start muted. We compare the three in detail in WhatsApp group vs community vs channel.

Running Black Friday week without burning your group
- 1Prepare before the week
Templates, store links and your posting times. See best times to post deals on WhatsApp.
- 2Post fewer, better deals
A flood of links makes people mute or leave. Pick the deals you'd share with a friend.
- 3Check prices before posting
Black Friday prices change by the hour. A dead deal costs trust.
- 4Disclose commissions
If links earn you money, say so. Our affiliate disclosure guide has wording.
- 5Honour every STOP right away
Remove the person and delete the number. That's POPIA-friendly and keeps reports down.
- Opt-in members open and click more
- Fewer reports, so your number stays safe
- Easier to show consent if a complaint ever arises
- Slower to grow than adding numbers
- You need to keep track of who asked to leave
- Some deals won't fit every member's interests
